March 31st

1901 – The S.S. Hope shipwrecked off the Iles de la Madeleine.

1988 – The islands only salt mine, Mines Seleine became privatized for 35 million dollars. The mine was sold to the Canadian Salt Society who is a subsidiary of the American company Morton Salt. They planed to expand their activities over a period of 12 months instead of the 10 month work period they had been doing.

March 30th

1935 - Octave Chiasson dies.

1951 - Radio-telephone service was inaugurated on the islands by Federal Deputy, Charles Canon and M.F. Buck, who was the Superintendant for the Wireless Telegraph at the time.

1962 – The Islands Chamber of Commerce officially became affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce of Quebec.

1983 – Franklin Delaney, originally from House Harbour, Magdalen Islands, became the vice president of Radio Canada.

1996 – An environmental summit was held on the Iles de la Madeleine.

March 29th

1902 – The Richard B. shipwrecked off the Iles de la Madeleine.

1972 – The parsonage of LaVerniere was the victim of fire. Only the baptisms, marriages and burials registers for 1902 to present day were saved. The registers covering the period from 1845 to 1875 were lost in the flames. The fire was labeled as arson.

2008 - The sealing ship the Acadien II sank in heavy ice while being towed by the Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker, the Alexander William. Four men died. The body of one man was never found and the trawler is a missing wreck off the coast of Nova Scotia, never seen again.

March 28th

1742 - Antoine and Joseph Pacaud won Concession of the Magdalen Islands which amounted to exclusive privileges to kill the walrus and seal which were plentiful on the islands at that time.

1975 – The Sebaste shipwrecked of the Iles de la Madeleine.

1991 – Dr Jean Lemieux launched his novel, La Lune Rouge, at the old convent bar, Chez Gaspard. The setting for this book was on Entry Island. It was a beautiful imaginative work which gave rise to the film of the same name.

March 27th

1974 – The Cygnee shipwrecked off the Iles de la Madeleine.

1983 – The Canadian Coast Guard in their ship the William Alexander detained the environmentalist ship the Sea Sheppard and it’s crew of 21 were arrested for intimidation of seal hunters. The protesters were taken to Sydney Nova Scotia and stood before the court of Justice there. They were released on the amount of $55,000 bail and were to appear before the judge in the courthouse at Perce, Quebec on June 15, 1983.

1997 – Haley’s Comet was seen in sky over Magdalen Islands.
