December 31st

1762 – The war between France and England had ended and Canada and Acadia came under the authority of the English. An American Colonel, Richard Gridley, requested the concession of the Magdalen Islands for the Lords of Trade. He received a temporary permit for its exploitation and in 1763, he organized the hunting and fishing of the islands.

1948 - Founding of the parish of Fatima.

December 30th

1879 – At the municipal council of Alright: Whereas the contractor for the buoys had presented an audited account, and whereas there were serious complaints against him, the said  Council having considered carefully such complaints, had deducted a third of his pay and granted him made ​​the sum of sixteen piastres (dollars) in currency. Adjourned sine die. Charles Chaisson, Mayor. Daniel Paquet, sec-tres.

1994A severe storm struck the Gulf during a regular voyage of the Lucy Maud Montgomery while on her way to Souris,  Prince Edward Island. She had to turn around in hazardous conditions.

December 29th

1906 – At the Municipality of Etang-du-Nord,

1) the minutes written in English by J. Ballantine, Secretary, where they were given a financial statement of receipts and expenditures of the Council established on November 30, 1906:

Taxes collected   921.99

Payed Bills             330.99

Deposited in the Bank of Nova Scotia   400.00

Money on hand   191.00

Total   $921.00

2) The deliberations of the council were written in English starting September 26, 1903 starting with William Leslie and continued with J. Ballantine until the assembly of the council on March 9, 1908 with the new secretary, Nectaire Thériault.

December 28th

1971 – The Islands Museum became officially incorporated as Musee de la Mer Inc. (Sea Museum).  The three signatures of this incorporation were: Gilbert Carbonneau, Théodoric Blaquière and Frédéric Laundry. Gilbert Carbonneau became the first president of the corporation.

December 27th

1882 - Mr Vital Richard brought the last mail run by schooner.

1958 -  Paul Hebert, the first Magdalen Islander author, who published a history text on the Islands called Les Iles de la Madeleine et les Madelinots died on this day.
